What Is An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)?

An EMT is a community medical worker which provides medical services on an ambulance team, or a fire rescue team. This individual receives a minimum of 170 hours of medical training. People often confuse EMTs with paramedics. It is important to note that an EMT receives far less training than a certified paramedic. All paramedics are EMTs, but all EMTs are not paramedics. An EMT is qualified to assist patients with oxygen administration, some medication administration, delivery of babies, and condition assessment.

Job Requirements

You can enroll in an EMT training program without any previous medical training. In most cases, there will be age requirements and possibly the requirement of a high diploma or equivalent. This is a great entry level position if you wish to pursue a career as a paramedic or nurse later on. Many EMTs go on to become paramedics, and many paramedics go on to become nurses. In the Australia, an entry-level EMTs can expect to make between 45K and 72K yearly. It is also important that an EMT have good mental health to be able to handle the stress of this position.
